Well, don't I feel like an idiot!  I stopped at the grocery store on my way home from work, and racked up a whole bunch of groceries.  Of course I was on my phone at the checkout stand (christmas eve plan organizing, I promise I'm not usually that rude!) and when I ran my card at the check out it was declined.  Declined!  I had happened to check the balance only a couple days ago and was 90% sure I shouldn't be overdrawn, so I was frantically apologizing to the clerk and panicking that my account had been hacked.  Had I used it at Target recently?  Probably; I couldn't remember.  I ended up leaving my groceries at the checkout stand and hurrying home to check my balance on-line.

But first I went to change out of my scrubs into (hopefully!) less infectious clothing.  As I went to toss my scrub pants into the laundry basket my visa card fell out of my front pocket, right where I put it after I bought soup and a gingerbread man for lunch.

Which is when I realized that distracted zanthine must have tried to use a different silver plastic card.  When I looked in my wallet I realized that I apparently tried to pay for groceries at QFC with my Nordstrom (department store credit card) card.  Doh!

I really should go back and buy the groceries, but it's after 9pm and I'm tired.  Also embarrassed.  Gah!

And in case I don't get a chance (I'm working wednesday and busy tomorrow) Merry Christmas!  I hope it's a wonderful New Year for you all!

Over on google.nz they have a very, very neat Doctor Who Doodle!  It's a game!  You can pick which doctor you want to be!  OK in my case it's more like "which Doctor do I want to regenerate into when the Dalek kills me".  Still deeply cool!

This is my niece Miss J (9 years old). My sister had gotten her a cat costume for Halloween this year, and Miss J was not happy. She wanted to be Katy Perry.

Cut for costumy goodness!Collapse )

I'm entertained she figured out a way to make that work!

Hope you're all having a great Halloween. I've had my mom here, but she left this afternoon. Back to real life!

In other news, my doctor thinks I have pertussis (AKA whooping cough). AGAIN. Bleh! Also, I stopped by Safeway on my way home from the doctor's office. I needed a few things-- An onion, honey, etc. Got all the way home and realized I totally forgot dishwasher detergent. Gah! I've been forgetting to pick it up for about a month, and I'm now totally out. I guess its handwashing for a few days!

Since other people are sharing childhood favorites I thought I'd join the party! This is one my mom would read to us when my sister and I were small. And as you can see I was programed from early childhood to cheer for the antihero. Hee-- I never had a chance, did I?

The Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee

Ho, for the Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee!
He was as wicked as wicked could be,
But oh, he was perfectly gorgeous to see!
The Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

His conscience, of course, was as black as a bat,
But he had a floppety plume on his hat
And when he went walking it jiggled - like that!
The plume of the Pirate Dowdee.

His coat it was handsome and cut with a slash,
And often as ever he twirled his mustache
Deep down in the ocean the mermaids went splash,
Because of Don Durk of Dowdee.

Moreover, Dowdee had a purple tattoo,
And struck in his belt where he buckled it through
Were a dagger, a dirk, and a squizzamaroo,
For fierce was the Pirate Dowdee.

So feaful he was he would shoot at a puff,
And always at sea when the weather grew rough
He drank from a bottle and wrote on his cuff,
Did Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

Oh, he had a cutlass that swung at his thigh
And he had a parrot called Pepperkin Pye,
And a zigzaggy scar at the end of his eye
Had Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

He kept in a cavern, this buccaneer bold,
A curious chest that was covered with mould,
And all of his pockets were jingly with gold!
Oh jing! went the gold of Dowdee.

His consience, of course it was crook'd like a squash,
But both of his boots made a slickery slosh,
And he went throught the world with a wonderful swash,
Did Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

It's true he was wicked as wicked could be,
His sins they outnumbered a hundred and three,
But oh, he was perfectly gorgeous to see,
The Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

My cousin Shannon made the news! She's focusing on getting more women in Congress.  I'm really kind of impressed.  In the last few years she's turned into one of my favorite relatives.  It's kind of neat to see her featured!

Needless to say I've liked season 9 much, much better than season 8. If I didn't know Joss was involved I would have assumed that season 8 was written and drawn by people who had either never watched the show, or who didn't actually like it. While there were a few thing I liked from season 8 (Dracula, Faith & Giles... er... I'm sure there was something else) I actively disliked what season 8 did to most of my favorite characters. Season 9 found them emotionally isolated in a world without magic, and soon split them up geographically too. Angel & Faith are off having a much better written series in London; Willow & Spike both splintered off into their own voyages of self discovery, Xander's had a huge chip on his shoulder that lead him to betray Buffy & Willow to the season's Big Bads recently. Dawn is fading away in the world without magic, and no one but the Core (see what they did there?) remember her.

This issue was about healing some of the fractures in these damaged relationships. Scoobie friendship is my kryptonite, so this issue already had me. A lot of season 9 has been about being a young adult and finding your place in the world. In the real world part of that transition is often changing relationships with your old friends from high school. In the Buffy-verse that's hard to watch, as I love Buffy's relationships with Willow, Xander, etc as much as I love Buffy or Willow themselves. Probably more than I love Andrew.

I liked the art this issue.
comic picspam with spoilers leik whoaCollapse )Buffy_well_1

Buffy's back to doing what she does best, and this was IMO one of the better issues of season 9. And things are starting to tie up into what will hopefully be a satisfying conclusion!

Dear Facebook: why do you feel the need to keep changing everything?  I'm just waiting for the phone call from zanthine-mom who will be frustrated and unable to do whatever it is she wants to do on facebook.  Which is probably to comment on everybody's pictures, but who knows?

::sigh::

I need to convince one of the nephews to take over as her tech support, you know?

It may be that I'm easily amused...

fandom crossovery goodness!Collapse )

snagged from facebook!

On the plus side I finally got to go see the Star Trek movie. I was in the hospital the weekend it opened, and have basically been recovering ever since. I did OK being up and about that long so I'm taking it as a good! Also (now that there's no visible muscle tissue in my incision--yay!) my doctor OK me to take an actual shower! I had to cover the incision pretty well, but! Shower! It felt so good!

And since I did OK at the movie I'm going to go see Much Ado in a couple of days! Yay!

I'm a fan of the designer Eileen Fisher. Her stuff is very simply cut and well made; lots of neutrals, and lots of interesting materials. Very drapey and well cut, and the styles don't change all that much. It's much too expensive for me to justify buying it unless it's on a very steep sale; or from ebay. Anyway one of my aunts feels the same way, and has a lot more money to spend shopping. She lost a bunch of weight a few years ago and gave me a whoooole bunch of Eileen Fisher outfits. Seriously, she gave me I think 9-10 sets of either top/ shell; cardigan/ shell, or jacket/ shell. All linen, marino wool, or silk. Probably the nicest gift I've ever been given! None of the pants worked as I'm probably 6 inches taller, but otherwise she pretty much provided my current grown-up wardrobe.

Anyway one thing I haven't worn in the 3 years since I got the clothing was a really cute white summery cardigan. It has 3/4 sleeves, and an empire cut. Really cute, which is why I kept it even though it had what looked like a coffee stain on the chest. I figured I could cover it with a pin or something. Anyway, after my unexpected success with Oxiclean i decided to give it a try on the sweater. I soaked it overnight, and washed it this morning on gentle.

cut for pixCollapse )

Whoa! For the record, that ball of lint is just about the size of my 12-ounce coffee mug. Apparently you really aren't meant to put hemp sweater into the washer!

The sweater came out great though, so not complaining! Though possibly I should take the "Hand wash only" instructions more seriously!

So I've been thinking about watching Warehouse 13.  It's available streaming on a couple of different services; does anyone have a strong opinion?  I don't know much about it, aside from just realizing that a couple of writers from the Buffy-verse live there now.

My mom has gone home, and it feels  kind of lonesome at casa zanthine.  I can't complain too much as she's been here since the second week of May.  Above and beyond the call of maternal duty!  Though I did have to spend quite a bit of time today (maybe 10-15 minutes) trying to find my vegetable steamer basket thingy.  I was just about to call my mom long distance to ask her if she remembered where she put it when I realized I hadn't looked in the back of one cupboard... and there it was!  Perched happily with the sandwich bags and the aluminium foil was my little silicone steamer basket.  Now I need to call her and ask why it needed to live there!

My incision is starting to heal nicely.  It still has a ways to go, but it looks a little better every time I change the dressing.  After all this time it's really encouraging.  Hardly any visible muscle at this point, which has to be good!

Well, my mom finally took off.  She headed down to Portland to spend time with my grandma & my aunts & uncles (She has 8 living siblings; most of them in the Portland area) and I miss her already!  I'd kind of gotten used to having a second person around.  It's awfully quiet and lonely all by myself here!  I've been getting out and walking around my neighborhood every day and I need to keep that up.  Though Madre-san leaving me does mean I can catch up on Game of Thrones, LOL!  My mom is not a fan, and honestly it's not the sort of thing I'd want to watch with her.  I've read the books, so I know what's coming.  I watched a couple episodes last night and have one more for today!  Also the last episodes (or two!) of Doctor Who, Elementary, and Grimm and most of the new (netflix) season of Arrested Development.

Possibly TMICollapse )

curiouswombat & hobbituk suggested that we should do a once a month, LJ, version of the Mass Observation Day Diary. As the UK wide day is always 12th May, they thought the 12th of each month.

So here is my first, just for LJ, Day in the Life post...

My day is not typical for me: I had major abdominal surgery a couple weeks ago and then had my incision dehisce. I'm off of work healing at the moment!

I woke up about 8 am and wandered out to the kitchen. My mom (who is visiting to help after my surgery) was in the shower. I put the water on for Madre-san's morning tea, and then ground the beans for my coffee and got it going. Breakfast was greek yoghurt with honey and fresh blueberries and whole grain toast. It was a beautiful sunny morning, but only about 52f/11c so a little too cold to eat breakfast outside.

After taking medications and doing a dressing change I set my mom up with my laptop to check her email, facebook, and airline ticket sites. She hasn't decided to go home yet, but as I seem to be recovering she probably won't hang out too much longer. She's been here for a month now!

Later in the morning we ran some errands; mailed a package to my grandmother in Portland, picked up some more dressing supplies, and some screws to mount a paper-work organizer thingy on my wall.  I'm debating putting up a screen door on my front door.  I could do it for about $200-300.  It would add a lot more light to my living room!

I was still feeling relatively perky so we went to a fun local burger place for a nice lunch outside. We split a bacon & blue cheese burger and an order of onion rings.  It was breezy, but pleasant to be out in the sun.

As the morning was really busy for recovering-me we cam home and after again changing my dressing I basically collapsed in my new wonderfully comfy out-door lounge chair for a couple of hours.  Even with my big floppy sun hat I got a little pink!  I totally failed, for the third day in a row, to get the new day lily planted in my garden.

Today's high temperature was a very pleasant 68f/ 20c with a strong enough breeze to make my wind-chime fairly continual.  According to the internet it's gusting to about 10-12 mph.  I got a little cold sitting outdoors so wandered in with my book.

Dinner tonight should have been cooked on my grill, but it's currently broken.  Webber is sending me a new part but it unfortunately wasn't in the collection of pizza ads and offers to re-side my house that constituted today's mail.

Dinner will be leftover Chicken Korma, with fresh water melon and peaches for dessert.

My mom and I are planning an exciting evening of reading our respective books, and we're planning to watch the last episode of the most recent series of Foyle's War.

I'll then do one more dressing change, and got to bed early!  And possibly go screaming mad from sheer boredom!

It's been a nice week in my neck of the cyber-woods.  We've had great weather, sunny and with highs in the mid 70sf/ mid 20sC.  Great weather to sit in my tiny back "yard" in a comfy lounge with a good book.  This is unusually summery weather for the PNW.  We rarely get this much sun so early in the summer!

My incision dehiscence has increased.Possibly TMI about zanthine-woundCollapse ).  Gah!  The doctors are saying "6 to 8 weeks" now for it to heal.

I did feel well enough today to go out for lunch with my mom.  We went to a favorite local place of mine and ate sitting outside.  It really wiped me out, but it was nice to actually leave my house for a bit!

 Sigh.

Madre-san (zanthine-mom) is sick now too.  She hasn't been feeling great all day, but scurried around running errands for me.  There's this whole saga about how I need sterile saline to irrigate my incision, but they didn't give enough for more than a few days at the ER.  "You can pick up more dressing supplies at the drugstore if you need them" before my appointment monday with the oncologist.  Of course the drugstore insisted that you need a prescription...  cue the running around.

Anyway Madre-san ended up going into Urgent care with what looks like strep throat.  Maybe a version of Dirtlifegrl's recent Kinder Plaugen.  She went to bed already; and it's only 8:30!

I'm hanging in there.  More bloody fluid, though thankfully not nearly as much.  Thankfully I have a washer & drier.  I'd seriously be up a creek otherwise!

But bleh.  Time for some healing in casa zanthine!

ETA: in further first world problem I am apparently so out of it t hat I seem to have just pulled my nightie on over my bra before climbing into bed with my laptop.  Now i find myself so lazy that I'm seriously debating just sleeping in the darn thing.  Sigh.

I did have one bright side of the whole "tons of blood all over adventure from last night": laundry.  There was quite a lot of blood.  I think it was dirtlifegrl who introduced me to oxiclean.  I threw some in a big bowl last night and filled with water and added the clothes in question and basically hoped for the best.  I was very impressed this morning.  They looked pretty darn not-bloody.  I washed them in a load with more oxiclean and regular detergent and they're all pretty darn wearable.  Very, very surprised!  Does blood really well!

now, off to change dressing, take a whooole bunch of pills, and then, and most importantly, Take a Nap!
