I'm still around, honest! I've just been sick a bunch. Bleh!

My heart thing is getting to be No Fun at all. The cardiologist thinks I do have Wolf Parkinson White syndrome. I'm scheduled to have an ablation September 8th. I'm actually looking forward to it! The medicine that keeps the crazy high heart rate mostly in check makes me feel awful. And it's not really safe to drive as I get really light-headed and dizzy. And most of all they won't let me have caffeine until after the ablation. The herbal tea just doesn't cut it!

My mom is here though, which is great. She's going to stay until after thanksgiving. Yay! She's also made me get better organized. It's looking pretty spiffy around Casa Zanthine!

I've tried to catch up here and there with LJ, but it's been a little tricky. I'll try to do better!

And New Who tonight!

Man, I'm really not having a great morning. I got like no sleep last night, and I just realized I totally forgot to put the recycling out. I realized it when I heard the truck pulling out of my driveway 5 minutes ago. This wouldn't be a big deal except I forgot last time too. And they only collect every other week!

Then I made some coffee. I've been having a horrible time with diverticulosis this spring-- they're actually talking about resecting my bowel. It's been nothing but trouble since last spring, when it was obstructed by that big mass. So I've basically been on either clear liquids or "soft" with almost no coffee. But I really wanted a cup this morning, you know? So I poured the nice dark ethiopian out of my french press and into my cup, which already had the half and half. Then took a drink and almost cried-- the half and half had gone off! Woe!

Anyway meme time!

What I'm reading Wednesday:

Snagged from all over my flist!

1) What I just finished reading:

The Mitford Girls: The Biography of an Extraordinary Family, by Mary S Lovell.

Fascinating book about fascinating people. Talk about Eccentric!Collapse ). You just can't make this stuff up!

2) What I'm reading now:

Little Girl Lost, by Brian McGilloway.

I've read a several of the books in his Inspector Devlin series, and may like this Lucy Black series even more! Set in Northern Ireland it's a police procedural, but gorgeously written and characterized. He has a new book coming out this summer. I've preordered!

3) What I'm reading next:

Books by the Mitford sisters. Probably The Pursuit of Love, by Nancy and Hons and Rebels, by Jessica. And Someone You Know by Brian McGilloway. Out in a couple of weeks!

My upstairs neighbor (I have the bottom half of the two story building) is having a party today.  A work barbeque.  I really shouldn't complain-- I rarely hear her, and it is saturday afternoon-- but it's getting increasingly louder as the afternoon progresses.  I don't really mind the loud 80s music.  It's certainly better than the neighbor who blared Lil' Wayne all last summer, and there has been a fair amount of David Bowie mixed in with the ZZ top.

Currently there are two separate drunken arguments going on.  Argument one seems to involve gluten sensitivity and if it actually exists, and whether people who have/ claim to have it should drink beer.  "There's no bread in beer" someone upstairs keeps saying.  Another slurred voice is arguing that the first person drinking said beer is proof than gluten sensitivity doesn't actually exist.  It's really sort of entertaining from down here.

Argument two seems to involve Van Halen.

As long as the beer cans stay out of my azaleas I'm cool.  though I may put my headphones on!

 Hi guys, I'm back!

I got my laptop back this afternoon and got everything installed and back up to date.  So glad I'm fairly regular with the backups!  Turns out it wasn't the hard drive (which they figured out after changing it out, LOL) but the HD cable.  Which is now changed too, and I'm back in the computer world again.  I've been checking in from time to time on my phone, but it's tricky to comment.  Woe!

Anyway I've learned some life lessons recently:

1)  Back up your data.  Often.
2)  Get your eyes checked every year.  I went two.  I got new glasses, and when I put them on I realized just how bad it had gotten!  Never again!
3)  When sorting laundry don't let yourself get distracted.  The new jeans and the whites were not an ideal combo.

Hope things are well with you!

Well, don't I feel like an idiot!  I stopped at the grocery store on my way home from work, and racked up a whole bunch of groceries.  Of course I was on my phone at the checkout stand (christmas eve plan organizing, I promise I'm not usually that rude!) and when I ran my card at the check out it was declined.  Declined!  I had happened to check the balance only a couple days ago and was 90% sure I shouldn't be overdrawn, so I was frantically apologizing to the clerk and panicking that my account had been hacked.  Had I used it at Target recently?  Probably; I couldn't remember.  I ended up leaving my groceries at the checkout stand and hurrying home to check my balance on-line.

But first I went to change out of my scrubs into (hopefully!) less infectious clothing.  As I went to toss my scrub pants into the laundry basket my visa card fell out of my front pocket, right where I put it after I bought soup and a gingerbread man for lunch.

Which is when I realized that distracted zanthine must have tried to use a different silver plastic card.  When I looked in my wallet I realized that I apparently tried to pay for groceries at QFC with my Nordstrom (department store credit card) card.  Doh!

I really should go back and buy the groceries, but it's after 9pm and I'm tired.  Also embarrassed.  Gah!

And in case I don't get a chance (I'm working wednesday and busy tomorrow) Merry Christmas!  I hope it's a wonderful New Year for you all!

Over on google.nz they have a very, very neat Doctor Who Doodle!  It's a game!  You can pick which doctor you want to be!  OK in my case it's more like "which Doctor do I want to regenerate into when the Dalek kills me".  Still deeply cool!

This is my niece Miss J (9 years old). My sister had gotten her a cat costume for Halloween this year, and Miss J was not happy. She wanted to be Katy Perry.

Cut for costumy goodness!Collapse )

I'm entertained she figured out a way to make that work!

Hope you're all having a great Halloween. I've had my mom here, but she left this afternoon. Back to real life!

In other news, my doctor thinks I have pertussis (AKA whooping cough). AGAIN. Bleh! Also, I stopped by Safeway on my way home from the doctor's office. I needed a few things-- An onion, honey, etc. Got all the way home and realized I totally forgot dishwasher detergent. Gah! I've been forgetting to pick it up for about a month, and I'm now totally out. I guess its handwashing for a few days!

Since other people are sharing childhood favorites I thought I'd join the party! This is one my mom would read to us when my sister and I were small. And as you can see I was programed from early childhood to cheer for the antihero. Hee-- I never had a chance, did I?

The Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee

Ho, for the Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee!
He was as wicked as wicked could be,
But oh, he was perfectly gorgeous to see!
The Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

His conscience, of course, was as black as a bat,
But he had a floppety plume on his hat
And when he went walking it jiggled - like that!
The plume of the Pirate Dowdee.

His coat it was handsome and cut with a slash,
And often as ever he twirled his mustache
Deep down in the ocean the mermaids went splash,
Because of Don Durk of Dowdee.

Moreover, Dowdee had a purple tattoo,
And struck in his belt where he buckled it through
Were a dagger, a dirk, and a squizzamaroo,
For fierce was the Pirate Dowdee.

So feaful he was he would shoot at a puff,
And always at sea when the weather grew rough
He drank from a bottle and wrote on his cuff,
Did Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

Oh, he had a cutlass that swung at his thigh
And he had a parrot called Pepperkin Pye,
And a zigzaggy scar at the end of his eye
Had Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

He kept in a cavern, this buccaneer bold,
A curious chest that was covered with mould,
And all of his pockets were jingly with gold!
Oh jing! went the gold of Dowdee.

His consience, of course it was crook'd like a squash,
But both of his boots made a slickery slosh,
And he went throught the world with a wonderful swash,
Did Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

It's true he was wicked as wicked could be,
His sins they outnumbered a hundred and three,
But oh, he was perfectly gorgeous to see,
The Pirate Don Durk of Dowdee.

My cousin Shannon made the news! She's focusing on getting more women in Congress.  I'm really kind of impressed.  In the last few years she's turned into one of my favorite relatives.  It's kind of neat to see her featured!

Needless to say I've liked season 9 much, much better than season 8. If I didn't know Joss was involved I would have assumed that season 8 was written and drawn by people who had either never watched the show, or who didn't actually like it. While there were a few thing I liked from season 8 (Dracula, Faith & Giles... er... I'm sure there was something else) I actively disliked what season 8 did to most of my favorite characters. Season 9 found them emotionally isolated in a world without magic, and soon split them up geographically too. Angel & Faith are off having a much better written series in London; Willow & Spike both splintered off into their own voyages of self discovery, Xander's had a huge chip on his shoulder that lead him to betray Buffy & Willow to the season's Big Bads recently. Dawn is fading away in the world without magic, and no one but the Core (see what they did there?) remember her.

This issue was about healing some of the fractures in these damaged relationships. Scoobie friendship is my kryptonite, so this issue already had me. A lot of season 9 has been about being a young adult and finding your place in the world. In the real world part of that transition is often changing relationships with your old friends from high school. In the Buffy-verse that's hard to watch, as I love Buffy's relationships with Willow, Xander, etc as much as I love Buffy or Willow themselves. Probably more than I love Andrew.

I liked the art this issue.
comic picspam with spoilers leik whoaCollapse )Buffy_well_1

Buffy's back to doing what she does best, and this was IMO one of the better issues of season 9. And things are starting to tie up into what will hopefully be a satisfying conclusion!

Dear Facebook: why do you feel the need to keep changing everything?  I'm just waiting for the phone call from zanthine-mom who will be frustrated and unable to do whatever it is she wants to do on facebook.  Which is probably to comment on everybody's pictures, but who knows?

::sigh::

I need to convince one of the nephews to take over as her tech support, you know?

It may be that I'm easily amused...

fandom crossovery goodness!Collapse )

snagged from facebook!

On the plus side I finally got to go see the Star Trek movie. I was in the hospital the weekend it opened, and have basically been recovering ever since. I did OK being up and about that long so I'm taking it as a good! Also (now that there's no visible muscle tissue in my incision--yay!) my doctor OK me to take an actual shower! I had to cover the incision pretty well, but! Shower! It felt so good!

And since I did OK at the movie I'm going to go see Much Ado in a couple of days! Yay!

I'm a fan of the designer Eileen Fisher. Her stuff is very simply cut and well made; lots of neutrals, and lots of interesting materials. Very drapey and well cut, and the styles don't change all that much. It's much too expensive for me to justify buying it unless it's on a very steep sale; or from ebay. Anyway one of my aunts feels the same way, and has a lot more money to spend shopping. She lost a bunch of weight a few years ago and gave me a whoooole bunch of Eileen Fisher outfits. Seriously, she gave me I think 9-10 sets of either top/ shell; cardigan/ shell, or jacket/ shell. All linen, marino wool, or silk. Probably the nicest gift I've ever been given! None of the pants worked as I'm probably 6 inches taller, but otherwise she pretty much provided my current grown-up wardrobe.

Anyway one thing I haven't worn in the 3 years since I got the clothing was a really cute white summery cardigan. It has 3/4 sleeves, and an empire cut. Really cute, which is why I kept it even though it had what looked like a coffee stain on the chest. I figured I could cover it with a pin or something. Anyway, after my unexpected success with Oxiclean i decided to give it a try on the sweater. I soaked it overnight, and washed it this morning on gentle.

cut for pixCollapse )

Whoa! For the record, that ball of lint is just about the size of my 12-ounce coffee mug. Apparently you really aren't meant to put hemp sweater into the washer!

The sweater came out great though, so not complaining! Though possibly I should take the "Hand wash only" instructions more seriously!

So I've been thinking about watching Warehouse 13.  It's available streaming on a couple of different services; does anyone have a strong opinion?  I don't know much about it, aside from just realizing that a couple of writers from the Buffy-verse live there now.

My mom has gone home, and it feels  kind of lonesome at casa zanthine.  I can't complain too much as she's been here since the second week of May.  Above and beyond the call of maternal duty!  Though I did have to spend quite a bit of time today (maybe 10-15 minutes) trying to find my vegetable steamer basket thingy.  I was just about to call my mom long distance to ask her if she remembered where she put it when I realized I hadn't looked in the back of one cupboard... and there it was!  Perched happily with the sandwich bags and the aluminium foil was my little silicone steamer basket.  Now I need to call her and ask why it needed to live there!

My incision is starting to heal nicely.  It still has a ways to go, but it looks a little better every time I change the dressing.  After all this time it's really encouraging.  Hardly any visible muscle at this point, which has to be good!
