Needless to say I've liked season 9 much, much better than season 8. If I didn't know Joss was involved I would have assumed that season 8 was written and drawn by people who had either never watched the show, or who didn't actually like
it. While there were a few thing I liked from season 8 (Dracula, Faith & Giles... er... I'm sure there was something else) I actively disliked what season 8 did to most of my favorite characters. Season 9 found them emotionally isolated in a world without magic, and soon split them up geographically too. Angel & Faith are off having a much better written series in London; Willow & Spike both splintered off into their own voyages of self discovery, Xander's had a huge chip on his shoulder that lead him to betray Buffy & Willow to the season's Big Bads recently. Dawn is fading away in the world without magic, and no one but the Core (see what they did there?) remember her.
This issue was about healing some of the fractures in these damaged relationships. Scoobie friendship is my kryptonite, so this issue already had me. A lot of season 9 has been about being a young adult and finding your place in the world. In the real world part of that transition is often changing relationships with your old friends from high school. In the Buffy-verse that's hard to watch, as I love Buffy's relationships with Willow, Xander, etc as much as I love Buffy or Willow themselves. Probably more than I love Andrew.
I liked the art this issue.
There was quite a bit of jumping and rappelling. Apparently in the comic-verse you don't need to bother with belaying!
Even Buffy and Willow can't remember Dawn's name now
The Zen demon gave Xander some advice. I admit to snickering here!
Spike's really mastering the use of his phone as a weapon. But Spike (back with Dawn in San Francisco) is trying to do the best thing for Dawn, which is to remind her she's loved. So he makes Xander talk to her. Aww.
I may be sold on Dawn/Xander!
Severin & Simone are making Bad Choices in the Deeper Well, but scoobies have put the band back together. It turns out Simone's thing is that she's been turning slayers into vampires. We're not sure exactly what Severin's up to, but Simone's now a Slaypire.
Buffy's back to doing what she does best, and this was IMO one of the better issues of season 9. And things are starting to tie up into what will hopefully be a satisfying conclusion!
